History and Culture
Crikvenica owns a quite old place under the name Kotor that is located on the top of a hill. The Romans named this part of land Ad turres and the villagers that came afterwards named it Kotor (kod tornjeva = at the towers). The history of Crikvenica is connected with the one od Vinodol. It took centuries until some little places developed here. In the same manner Crikvenica and Vinodol developed and raised up to be great examples of courtesy and hospitality.
In the antique times there was s part of a roman road that stared in Aquileia in northern Italy that leaded all the way to Dalmatia. That is when Ad turres was acknowledged the first time. That is how Crikvenica got its name.
In the mediaeval times Crikvenica belong to Vinodol. The ruler was the duke of the island Krk, the family Frankopan. The family ruled over this place until 1225 when the families Frankopan and Zrinski were executed.
This place is also very special because it always used the Croatian language and its glagolitic script.
